Meet the J/24

The J/24 is the core training platform at Inspire Sailing for both Basic Keelboat and Basic Cruising courses. We chose the J/24 because of its performance characteristics - sturdy, nimble, and responsive.

With a length of 24 feet, a beam of 9 feet, and displacement of 3,100 pounds, (900 pounds of which are in the lead keel), the J/24 by J/Boats is the world’s most popular keelboat class.

The draft is 4 feet, so while that’s great for navigating the San Francisco Bay, you still have to watch those tides. We’ve gotten the J/24s stuck in a few places coming in or out of the Berkeley Marina at the wrong time!

Our J/24s typically come with a Tohatsu 6-horsepower outboard engine. This is great for marina procedures, but remember, before you exit the marina you’ll want both sails raised and trimmed. The little outboard engine isn’t going to be very effective against 15-20 knot wind and 2-3 foot chop. Sail the boat!

A bit of trivia: There were over 5,500 J/24s built. At one point over 50,000 active sailors in 150 fleets across 40+ countries were sailing these boats.

You can read more about the J/24 here.
